– Girls outperform boys againThe Georgetown education district came out on top at this year?s Grade Six Assessment, an exam which qualifies students to move on to secondary education.Minister of Education Shaik Baksh gave the results yesterday, saying he was pleased with the performance, especially with the improved performance in Mathematics.He said every child who wrote the Assessment will have access to secondary education, either in secondary schools or secondary departments of Primary schools.Of the top 106 candidates, 39 were boys and 67 were girls. The girls also performed better than the boys in every subject and in every region.Of the 16,351 students who wrote the Grade Six Assessment 34 per cent gained more than half of the marks in Mathematics (a 13 per cent increase over 2009); 24 per cent in English Language (a three percent drop); 33 per cent Science; and 34 per cent Social Studies.Minister Baksh said several efforts have been and are being taken to improve the performance at the Grade Six level. The Ministry of Education has instituted several remediation programmes, including the setting up of a literacy unit at Ministry of Education.As a result, remediation classes are offered after school hours. For those students who achieve less than a 50 per cent score at the Grade Six Assessment, they will be able to benefit from remedial classes over a one month period before school reopens in September.In addition, the schools in every region with the lowest performance will be targeted for an enhancement programme.Starting next year, the Ministry will introduce a Literacy Certificate for students in Grade Four, bringing to bear pressure on teachers, schools, parents and communities.
