ban speech that offended the wrong council members
At 10:38 Wednesday morning, during the Dallas City Council debate over the five cent carryout bag tax, council member Lee Kleinman delivered one of the more eyebrow raising speeches in the horseshoe recent history. Council members from the so called southern sector were particularly displeased with remarks aimed at Southwest Center Mall and Oak Cliff, which Kleinman depicted as trash strewn areas populated by loose dogs unlike, say, his pristine North Dallas district.

The city been trying to vanish that business for at least the last eight years. In 2012 Orange Crush went before the city council to get its specific use permit renewed. The City Plan Commission recommended approval for five years; city staff recommended denying it. Assistant city manager Theresa O said it needed to go: like to make sure that when the soccer complex is open and ready to have the kids running around and playing that it will be safe and the rock crusher will have been relocated at that time. SUP visited council three times in the fall of 2012, with Alonzo always kicking the can down the road. That 90 day period has come and long gone by now, and still the crushing facility in operation. Its wall of concrete isn as tall as it used to be, but it still there, even after city attorneys have been meeting with its owners to wind up that period. Kleinman says it likely city attorneys are getting messages from council members, with him on the shut it down side and Alonzo nowhere to be found. (Messages have been left for her.) I represent a vocal and active group, and between those things it turned me. And the thing that actually also made a difference was the realization this would be yet another ordinance it would be impossible for us to enforce, and I stated that at the end: We shouldn make rules we don have the will to enforce.
