About two thirds of the way through Michael Feinstein's June 1 inaugural performance as principal conductor of the Pasadena Pops Feinstein's debut as a conductor anywhere the acclaimed interpreter of the Great American Songbook turned to the audience and offered a heartfelt,[url=http://www.hollisteruk.co.uk/]hollister clothing[/url], "I'm ready for a drink."
The words were greeted with sympathetic laughter by concertgoers at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Arcadia where the Pops holds its summer concert season. He risked longer glances away from the scores in front of him, made eye contact with the musicians and often guided them with engaging bounce and joked about the peacocks raucously chiming in as they roamed the Arboretum grounds like cape dragging divas.
An introductory grab bag of Feinstein picks,[url=http://www.nikeblazer-pascher.fr/]@#$%& blazer[/url], the evening's program featured a fascinating, eclectic mix of the familiar and seldom (and never) heard.
"An American in Paris Overture" opened the concert with recurrent brassy, near cacophonous blasts that may have been due less to Feinstein's initial by the numbers efforts than to a miscalibrated acoustical system that seemed to blunt nuances in other symphonic pieces involving the orchestra as a whole. Johnson introduced by Feinstein as a West Coast premiere, was another selection that lost some definition in the acoustic design. But the vibrancy and swing of the work came through and seeing the Pops musicians twirl their standing basses with a synchronized flourish in the finale was a kick.
"Emily," the Johnny Mandel song from the 1964 film "The Americanization of Emily," was well served with lovely delicacy, and a Benny Goodman medley featuring clarinetist Don Shelton front and center was sublime. (Large screens flanking the orchestra shell offered welcome close ups of individual musicians.) The orchestra reached deep for a soulful performance of Henry Mancini's arrangement of Jay Ungar's "Ashokan Farewell," heightened by guest pianist Bryan Pezzone's sensitive touch and the notable expressiveness of Kreston's violin.

Among other highlights on the program: "Serenata," Leroy Anderson's 1947 "orchestral miniature" and the world premiere of an orchestral version of Lionel Newman's "Again," from the underscore of the 1948 film noir "Road House."
Feinstein's guest singers were just as eclectic as the program: "Desperate Housewives" creator (and former member of the song and dance Young Americans troupe) Marc Cherry pulled out the comedy stops in a performance of Noel Coward's "Mrs. Worthington,[url=http://www.sacvanessabruno.fr/]vanessa bruno @#$%&[/url]," a tongue in cheek cautionary response to a deluded stage mother.
