At a cost of $200M, the removal of asbestos from the University of Guyana?s Turkeyen campus is expected to commence on July 1.This disclosure was made yesterday when members of the university?s asbestos committee updated media practitioners on the process, which is expected to last for two months.Deputy Registrar of the university, and Chairman of the Committee, Vincent Alexander, said that the process, which is being funded by the Government through the Ministry of Education, is expected to remove asbestos from 15 buildings situated on the campus.Among the buildings infested with asbestos are the Physics,  the Chemistry, Health Sciences,  the Original Library, the Staff Club, the Administrative,Cheap Jerseys Free,  Technology Laboratories, the original Technology Classrooms, Technology Mechanical Workshop, the original Faculty of Arts, the Social Sciences, the George Walcott Lecture Theatre, the Small Lecture Theatre, the Cafeteria and the original Faculty of Education Buildings. The process is expected to be done in phases, with the first phase entailing the actual removal of asbestos and a sanitising process, after which the second phase of the replacement of roofs will commence. As a result, Alexander said, the Asbestos Committee has the responsibility to evacuate the campus, a task which has already commenced. The university has undertaken to vacate the campus and hand it over to the contractors on June 30, for the removal to be undertaken… ?I know that the contractors have previous track records in this regard, but I cannot speak to specifically who they are,? Alexander said.He informed that the university will continue some of its operations off-campus during the period of the asbestos removal. He divulged that the university?s operation bases will include the Dennis Irvine dormitory at Goedverwagting, for administrative operations; the University House at Pere Street, Kitty, for Library automations,Evan Engram Jersey, and the Tutorial High School, which is currently a tentative venue for the hosting of summer classes.Students, Alexander said,China Jerseys Online, will be able to keep abreast through media communication and their time table. He added that a general assembly will also be held to provide students with necessary information. And according to Head of the School of Professional Development, Deryck Boston,Jerseys From China Online, while it is normal for summer classes to be held in early June, the asbestos removal process will see the courses commencing sometime later this month. He disclosed that approximately 54 different courses will be offered, which are expected to attract in excess of 900 students.Registration for the courses are currently ongoing, and according to Boston,China Jerseys Wholesale, they will be completed some time at the end of August to allow students to register for the new academic year, which is likely to commence during this year or early 2009.Alexander revealed that the university has also been considering alternative measures should the asbestos removal process not be completed on time.?If perchance they do not complete the exercise by the end of August, we will have to do adjustments to our next semester, and we have already worked out possible scenarios… However, the intention is irrespective of what adjustment we do,Cheap Jerseys Free Shipping, once we do not start later than January of 2009, we are in the position to conclude the work of 2008/2009 by August 2009.?Alexander said that although the efforts will have to be made to catch up, ?We will not go beyond our normal academic year in 2009, provided that they conclude  the work by December 2008.?It was additionally noted by Alexander that staffers of the university will in no way be disadvantaged in terms of their remuneration during the entire process. The asbestos removal process was prompted by concerns expressed by the university community of the possible health implications of the substance. As a result, the university?s administration convened a broad-based asbestos committee to address the issue. One of the main tasks of the committee was to determine exactly the extent of the presence of asbestos on campus.A technical team headed by Mr Melvyn Sankies decided that the presence of asbestos would have to be determined by a detailed survey of the suspected buildings.Sufficient samples of the suspected materials were collected to be scientifically analysed to ascertain the amount and type of asbestos present. The samples were reportedly sent to the Canadian laboratory, Resource Environmental Associates Ltd, for detailed analysis. The results confirmed that the ceilings of the suspected buildings did contain fairly high concentrations of asbestos, but not unusually high for the type of material, consisting of chrysotile and amosite type of asbestos. However, with the exception of two samples, the wall samples did not contain any asbestos, and posed no health risks. The affected walls that were found to be infested are isolated to specific parts of two buildings.
