A full house at SPCA
"The winter months are a little worse than the rest of them. It's the ones I can't help, they're the ones I worry about the ones I can't take in or find homes for are the ones I worry about."
"Today alone, we took in two. We have one coming in that a lady found in her barn. We deal with maybe anywhere's from five to 10, maybe 15 calls a day dealing with cats," she said.
As of yesterday, Brown said all of the cages at the shelter were occupied.
"I'm supposed to say every cage I have has a cat in it. We adopted a few this week," Brown said.
"It varies the cat population I'd be scared to say it's close to 100, but we're travelling close to that."
And Brown said the shelter, ugg soldes, despite the recent economic turmoil, came out better than expected at the end of 2008.
"My gratitude and the animal's gratitude, there's not words to say how good the people are to the SPCA in Pictou County. It's been great this year. And I thought it was going to be hard this year because there were a lot of jobs lost."
At the same time, the financial hardships also meant some people had to give up their pets. Brown said the SPCA did have some of those cases. "Not an overload of it but the odd one."
As for empty cages, I seen them empty, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon when I asked if they could help me find homes for these kittens, and I was told there is no room nor help they could give me. I will tell you all right now, everyone of you, if you are a corporate sponser/supporter of the spce, they will find the room for you, look at michelin tire for example, several cats are dropped of there every year, and have been for years, each spring and early summer before the first litters are born, the cats are rounded up and brought to the spca, they take them,@#$%& jackets, no question asked. Why should there be a different set of rules for the public people and the rules set out for the ones who donate the most money? There shouldn't be as someone noted here, the place is for the animals, true, it is, but every person I know who needed help there is and was turned away. Big companies are not!
I am a volunteer at the SPCA who is out at that shelter every week and I can guarantee you that they do place more than one cat in a cage, unless it is a litter of kittens with their mother they are then placed in one of the very very large cages. You people should be ashamed of yourselfs, because you may have a beef with someone at the shelter you then take it out on the animals, refuse to help those animals, admitting that you have the abilities to help them and won't because someone may have stepped on your toes. Maybe Dee says that they have a full house sometimes when really they don't and the reason she says they have no room is really because there is not enough food in stock to feed another 10 cats and dogs. I've gone out there and saw that they were low on food and personally bought bags of food, treats for the cats and dogs and toys because if I have a few extra dollars to spare I would rather put them towards a good cause rather than get my panties in a knot over someone not taking in some animals if there is no room to take them in. Dee is an unbelieveable person and cares very much for those animals and would do anything and stay as long as it takes to get an animal adopted, I've been there and saw it first hand myself. That shelter runs solely on donations, nothing else, think of it, you need money to heat the place, lights, food for the animals, montre swatch, someone to come in and dump that garbage bin a couple times of week, air force 1, cat litter,@#$%& mercurial superfly, bedding for the animals, cleaning supplies, etc. That's a lot of expenses to run on only donations. Dee is in and out of the shelter 20 or more times a day, that shelter may close at 3pm but it doesn't mean the animals don't need to be looked after past 3pm. Next time you see Dee ask her how she spent her Christmas day. She spent it at the shelter with the animals. Ask her how she feels when she arrives at the shelter to find a dog tied to the door, just left there. Or how she feels when animals are dumped off there on Christmas day. Don't dump all over a person because maybe they were having an off day do to the stressful job they have. So the next time you want to be hurtful and lash out at someone, lash out at yourself for being so hateful and selfish towards a group of homeless animals that you refuse to help due to someone not taking some cats in due to a shelter being full or them having a bad day. And maybe Kathy you should give up some of that time you have on your hands and come out to the shelter and volunteer your time instead of spending 12 hours, since 10am this morning posting hateful comments.
I believe everyone who has read and commented on this article is an animal lover. It really got me thinking that I and perhaps some of you could call Dee Brown and ask what we could do to help out at the SPCA so that more animals might have a safe place to go. I understand that some of you have made donations in the past but, maybe asking Dee Brown what specifically could be done to allow more animals to be admitted in could help. Maybe donating cages could allow more animals to be housed? I am very allergic to cats so I couldn't volunteer within the shelter but I am going to call Dee Brown tomorrow to ask what kind of food or supplies I could bring out to Granton for the animals. I hope other animal lovers who read this article might do the same (if they financially can)
Sounds like some people have had some frustration with the PC SPCA. I dislike dealing with unprofessional people too, even if they are simply volunteers. I think stray animals are definately an issue that must be addressed in PC. Nobody likes to see a stray animal but, soccer shirts, not everybody wants to take in a stray cat or dog. If they can't be brought the SPCA then the problem will only continue. If you have supported the SPCA in the past, kate spade surprise sale, please continue to do so, it's not for the people that work there, it is for the animals that have nowhere else to go. If you have had a bad experience with people working at the SPCA tell them that you don't like their attitudes or their lack of professionalism but, you want to support the animals. Kijiji or the Barter might be a place to list animals that you can not care for. I found my Shepard pup using the Kijiji site and she is awesome!! Also an aside Colin seems like he has nothing better to do with his time than to push peoples buttons and maybe all of his computer typing energy could be put to use raising funds for the SPCA or cleaning cages but,@#$%& air max trainers, thats just my assessment;) I don't want to seem like a mouthpiece.
I echo chuck's sentiments. I feel sorry that the local SPCA is unable to handle the load. I respect the work Dee and others are trying to do with limited resources. The only cats we have ever owned came from the local SCPA or one's we found at or near our property. . We are also former contributors,@#$%&, but got turned away when we found a new batch of kittens (mothered by a stray) in our out building. As a result, our cat family doubled and money that would have gone to the SPCA went (and is still going) to cover neutering, vet bills and food. Fair to say, that as contributors, we felt abandoned. Our days of financially supporting the local SPCA are over.
I offered to pay for the food for my dog! There was no way I could afford to pay for boarding as well. I was merely expressing my own experience with the SPCA. Its not like I was going on vacation. It was a matter of safety for my family AND my pet. How naive of me to expect that an agency devoted to animals could be of assistance in the the event of ANY person with pets trying to flee an abusive situation. Now that I am back on my feet and in a position to donate to charity (and I do),@#$%& air, the SPCA is not on my list.
without the support of the public no strays or abandoned pets will have this safe place. SPCA and NS Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, babyliss pro nano titanium, without this support from all of us these animals will be left without nothing and no place to go. So to those who have issues with the staff, please do not abandon the support for the animals, they need us to.
well kathy you think you know alot about what goes on and you probably have never worked at the spca. if there are 2 cats in a cage its probably because they are from the same litter,burberry@#$%&. maybe they are 2 out of 6 in a litter that didnt get adopted at the same time as the rest of them. think before you write. I am proud of you for what you do because by helping 1 animal makes a difference.
as,instyler curling iron. Chuck for the name not being on the bulletin board they have a book that they write names and phone numbers in bet you didnt think of that Chuckie! You talk as if you know all the answers as to how the SPCA operates. you are probably one of the ones that said they would volunteer but when you were called you had an excuse! And no Michelin doesnt take all of their cats there. dont make up crap that you dont know what you are talking about. like I said volunteer your time and not your mouth. Thank God everyone in this county is not as daft as some on this forum when it comes to important issues. Money doesnt talk and neither does knowing someone on the Board of Directors. there are no favorites. the animals come first not those who donate once a year and think they own the place. There are many homeless animals in this county and it is because of stupid people who dont get them spayed or neutered. they toss them away when they are no longer babies or because they had a new baby and dont want the pet anymore. People are cruel lets not ever forget that. IT IS NOT THE ANIMALS FAULT.
As far as the bleeding heart for Dee how about the next time she has a bunch of healthy cats( that did nothing wrong in this world except be born) ready to be taken to the vets to be euthanized she call you for the task. Bet you wont have so much to say then.
I cant believe the opinions that are on here. The people working at the SPCA are volunteers trying to do the best they can for Homeless Aninmal . I am sure they have frustrating days, when they have no one to take these little creatures and have to be put to sleep, and maybe that might of been one of those days you werent treated the way you felt you should of been. Why dont you take a step back and think about what you are complaining about instead of threatening to no longer support the SPCA because of how you feel you were treated. The ANIMALS did NOTHING to you. Selfish, Selfish, Selfish. I will not be donating anymore either.
To those of you who donate money, time or resources to the local SPCA I applaud you. To those of you who think that because you donated a few bucks to a place that costs thousands of dollars to operate a year what gives you the right to think that just because you donated that you should be taken on a special basis if you have a stray.
The SPCA is there to help abused and abandoned animals but they have rules and regulations to abide by also such as 1 cat per cage. If the shelter is full thats it folks they cant take anymore,katespade@#$%&.
Perhaps when you went down and a cage or 2 were empty it was because a batch of cats just went to be euthanized or Dee already called in some and they didnt arrive by the time you got there.
If Dee was unprofessional as some of you said then think for a minute what it must be like to load up your car and take in a batch of cats to have them euthanized. How do you think that must feel to an animal lover such as herself? Not very nice playing God you know.
Perhaps she just got off of the phone from the 10th caller in a row who growled and complained that the vet wont help them with an injured or very sick stray or the vet wont help someone have their pet spayed or just because people like you called and screamed at her because she cant take in their cat that they dont want anymore and threaten to kill it. How do you think that feels to deal with everyday, red sole shoes.
The SPCA would love to be able to help people with the vet costs but the vets wont even help the SPCA with costs. The govt wont help, the only people that help keep that place open are the kind people of this county who donate their money etc and the businesses who are kind enough to help out with what they can.
