Arcadia girls stick with their duct
Two Arcadia sixth graders make the lemonade stand a thing of the past as they enter into their third year of running a small online business selling duct tape purses.
Not to say that Sarah Stamets and Grace Kolbe,[url=http://www.doudoune-canadagoosepascher.fr/]@#$%&[/url], both 12, didn't try the lemonade stand. That was their second business. The first was a spa that they decided to open at age 6,[url=http://www.hermesbirkin-bags.us@#$%&/]hermes birkin[/url], and the third was a dog walking venture. It wasn't until they stumbled onto making duct tape purses that they found something that, well, stuck.
That was when the idea hit them. They had been experimenting with wallets, and it hadn't quite worked, but when they made their first purse, it just clicked.
The girls click in much the same way. They often finish each other's sentences as they spin around the room answering questions. They met in preschool, and both say they knew from the beginning that they wanted to start a business together.
Things started out small. Sarah and Grace bought colored duct tape from craft stores and learned to compare price and quality. They began to sell the purses to friends, and things got serious when Moments Salon of Phoenix placed an order. The duo set up a website to handle requests, and these days they buy duct tape in bulk.
The company name, Inspirational Bags, comes from the original quotes taped to the inside of each purse,[url=http://www.nikefreerun.fr/]@#$%& free run @#$%&[/url], such as, "If what you want doesn't come to you, go after it."
"I usually come up with the quotes," Grace said. "However, Sarah still retains veto power."
Perhaps that is part of what makes this business partnership successful.
They readily admit to their strengths and weaknesses.
"It took about 21/2 hours to make the site," Sarah said.
The girls also aren't afraid to admit mistakes. They have learned lessons about finances and took a loss on one business deal,[url=http://www.sac-lancelpascher.fr/]sac lancel[/url], but with an eye to the future they focus on their increasing quality standards and investment in new products, such as duct tape dresses.
"Every time we make one, we get better," Grace said.
This is reflected in their self produced commercial that focuses on quality and states the purses are both "a crazy style and a great deal,[url=http://www.pradahandbagsshoes@#$%&/]prada sunglasses[/url]."
They aren't the only ones who think so. They recently filled an order for a store in Telluride,[url=http://www.@#$%&-airmax2u@#$%&/]air max 2014[/url], Colo. While on vacation the girls spotted the boutique, Hopscotch,[url=http://www.ralphlaurenoutlet-uk.co.uk/]@#$%& uk[/url], and they didn't hesitate to pitch their product to the owner.
"Our bags are different,[url=http://www.burberryoutletonlinei@#$%&/]burberry outlet[/url]," Sarah said.
They know they won't sell everywhere, so when they see a potential buyer they go for it.
"We were really impressed by their professionalism," said Julie Peccedi, co owner of Hopscotch Boutique,[url=http://www.marcjacobshandbagsoutlet.net/]marc by marc jacobs[/url], adding that three of the purses have sold so far.
The purses take anywhere from 35 minutes to an hour and a half to make and range from $10 to $30. The product line includes bows, bangles and wine bags, all made from 100 percent duct tape. So far they have sold around $1,000 worth of purses.
Grace and Sarah say they usually work on the weekends when they have a break from school and their dizzying array of extracurricular activities,[url=http://www.red-bottomshoes.us/]christian louboutin shoes[/url].
Even so, that doesn't keep them from setting their sights high. They want to branch out and hope to see their merchandise selling in New York City shops one day.
