She explained that if someone is traversing a poorly lit road it is commonsense that the driver should avoid speeding and be more watchful for pedestrians.Statistics for the past 11 years have shown that pedestrians are most vulnerable to road accidents resulting in fatalities.Doorgen stressed that the onus is on drivers to take pedestrians? safety into consideration. They are expected to be cautious and careful at all times.She asserted that there is no such thing as the right of way. Vehicles are expected to stop at junctions to ensure no oncoming traffic and then continue their journey.Doorgen emphasized that it was observed that many vehicles are not stopping at junctions. She identified the junction at New Garden and Church Streets where a number of accidents have been occurring lately.Most vehicular accidents occur because motorists have been speeding and the council is appealing to drivers to drive within the specified speed limit.There are rules and regulations governing road use and they should be observed.Doorgen stated that persons should not drink and drive and obey road signs. She posited that if common courtesy is practised on the roadway many of the accidents that occur would be prevented.
