Bag fees and bans aren't needed, tiffany jewelry
Re: "Plastic bag bans and fees work. So what the holdup in Denver?," March 16 Perspective article.
Here we go condemning those nasty plastic bags again, montre fossil, complete with supporting statistics.
The one stat that stands out in Jeremy Meyer's article is the 8 to 11 percent number of bags found in the litter along the South Platte River. What makes up the other 90 percent? Studies have shown that most litter is made up of cigarette butts, burberry handbags, beverage containers and food wrappers.
Meyer goes on to state that these bags "sit for decades in landfills" and are "gumming up our world." According to several studies, plastic bags make up about 0.4 percent of the total waste in landfills. It is important to note that landfills are not large compost piles. Landfills are actually designed to minimize decomposition. Plastic bags are much more apparent as litter because they are light, fly around a lot and get stuck in trees and fences.
Plastic bags are not a problem in landfills and are only a small portion of outdoor litter,northface@#$%&. It would be a shame to impose taxes or fees or outright bans without further study.

A lot of people use plastic grocery bags to line small garbage cans in their bedrooms and bathrooms. To them, the 10 cent tax is just more nanny state meddling by a government that should stay out of the home. I, for one, think there are much more serious problems that should be consuming the limited resources of our political and government leaders.
