Mata Veleta
Spring. That's the first word that comes to mind when you see Mata Veleta. Bouncy and chatty she has the friendly neighbour air around her.
Having lived in the capital for the past 18 months, Veleta got cracking on her eponymous label that she had started in London only recently.
"I wasn't sure how to start work in India as I didn't know anyone," says this MBA turned designer. But the prospect of becoming a desperate housewife didn't entice.

"I have to sit with the craftsmen to get work done". The effort has paid off. Veleta has successfully despatched a consignment of her latest collection that blends Indian influences with European affluence to Milan, Athens and London.

"But most of all it comes from music," she says as she tunes her iPod to some cigar lounge classics. "The sound helps me play around with a design. Sometimes it takes me up to a year to create a bag," she says.
After graduating from the St Martin's School of Art in London, Rosnovsky started her accessory label. But wander lust brought her to India. "I came here imagining maharajas and peacocks and elephants on the road," she laughs.
"I landed in Paharganj and was shocked." But not undeterred. Enchanted by eastern mysticism she set up her base in Delhi and smartly capitalised on the pool of talented craftsmen available here. "I made some bags for a friend to sell in Vienna. When the buyer contacted me later, I started marketing and exporting bags to Europe," she says.
Today, she supplies to boutiques in Israel, Paris, London and Tokyo. While Rosnovsky designs, her brother Yuval helps seal the deals. "Plans are on the anvil to launch her self titled label in India through niche stores," he says.
While the prices may pinch (Rs 15,000 onwards) her bags marry form with function. Drawing inspiration from "heroic warriors, dreamy princesses" and Gothic patterns, her bags exude royal decadence. "I use the romance of the 1920s,[url=http://www.@#$%&--shoes@#$%&/]cheap @#$%&[/url]," she says like a wide eyed pixie.
