2013 MADA Now
I recently attended a conference at Artspace in Sydney that discussed the idea of the 21st Century artist. The idea for the conference emerged from earlier discussions between a few curators around what the artist's studio is today but evolved into a broader discussion about what in fact the artist was going to become. A list was made of the many iterations of artistic activity today the artist as ethnographer, the artist as educator, louboutin, the artist as curator, the artist as entrepreneur, the artist as designer, the artist as activist, the artists as theorist, the artist as. well. just an artist. And the list goes on. This proliferation of types underscored both the diversity of activity but also the fields' inherent instability. It's a hard thing to predict.
Indeed prediction is a dangerous game and over the course of two days people offered up all sorts of versions of this future. One artist suggested that climate change was going to destroy the planet in 50 years so why even bother with this discussion. Possible no question but I hope not. No art schools on a ravaged planet. A curator and academic reflected on Lars Von Trier's film Melancholia that revolves around the same subject so there was an apocalyptic thread in the room. Another artist's foot started shaking uncontrollably and tapping violently on the stage during one of the panel discussions because the whole discussion about the global art world was driving her mad, oakley sale. She didn't know she was doing it but she insisted that she was just making her work as she always had and yes you have to wear different hats but that's the life of an artist we all have to juggle different worlds these days, michael kors uk. An indigenous artist said I don't live in different worlds just one and it's the world of my family and community. It's all about that.
So many worlds to construct. Perhaps all that we are sure of is that art, like everything else, changes as the world does. Art responds to it and mediates it for all of us. We need it more than ever because it is a simple conduit for illuminating and comprehending the world.
At MADA we have a practice led, open studio program no longer differentiated by various disciplines. Our interdisciplinary course structure in the undergraduate stream that has enabled a fluid and open engagement with a multiplicity of artistic processes and pathways,@#$%& jackets, including greater interdisciplinary exchange across the entire faculty. This is already creating students that are broadly skilled across all the spheres of visual culture and production and are distinctively MADA students.
We have the most outstanding team of artists, historians and theorists on staff in the country, a collection of significant national and international figures and exciting emerging ones, whose skill as researchers and commitment to teaching is truly remarkable. As educators we are always open to improving what we do to make it exciting, relevant, critical and innovative. I would like to thank all the Fine Art staff for their hard work and generosity this year.
The Monash cultural precinct at Caulfield is deeply connected to the national and international art and design communities through our residency program and visiting artist forums, creating a dynamic atmosphere of dialogue and exchange that is constant and stimulating.
Our students are encouraged to take risks, to be open to a myriad of possibilities and processes and to forge a strong community of peers that will extend their further study into higher degrees or into the art world beyond the university. They are the force that drives the spirit of our place and the outstanding work they have produced for the graduate show is only part of the contribution they have made to the culture here at MADA. Their engagement with student life on campus in all its forms has been a pleasure to behold.
We are proud of your achievements and we look forward to watching you construct the world of the future,@#$%&.

Art is the promise of happiness,@#$%& trainers, a promise which is constantly being broken. Theodor Adorno (Daniel Palmer)
Art is a guarantee of sanity, chi hair. That is the most important thing I have said, north face outlet. Louise Bourgeois (Kathy Temin)
There are two types of art, good art and bad art, good art sells and bad doesn't. If you want to turn bad art into good art change your dealer. Ad Reinhardt (Euan Heng)
Irrational thoughts should be followed absolutely and logically, reebok. Sol LeWitt (Callum Morton)
Use a Rembrandt as an ironing board. Marcel Duchamp (Tara McDowell)
Judgment prevents the emergence of any new mode of existence. For the latter creates itself through its own forces, that is, through the forces it is able to harness,@#$%& uk, and is valid in and of itself inasmuch as it brings the new combination into existence. Herein, perhaps, lies the secret:to bring into existence and not to judge. Gilles Deleuze (Terri Bird)
I discover myself in what I see, michael kors. Octavio Paz (Claudia Terstappen)
The dead are outside time, herve leger, the dying and all the sick at home or in hospitals, and they are not the only ones,louisvuitton@#$%&, for a certain degree of personal misfortune is enough to cut us off from the past and the future. W. G. Sebald (Marian Crawford)
Common Sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternal walls of darkness. That being the case: travel to foreign countries, moncler outlet, read, walk through snow, "do" and finally, "there is no success like failure." Vladmir Nabokov (Dan Wollmering)
Such quotations lead us to presume that the text houses a dangerous, manipulative subject, a magician with enough power to manipulate the signs of other powerful magicians strategically for his own purposes. Boris Groys (Steven Rendall)
Nature abhors a vacuum. Attributed to Aristotle (Luke Morgan)
